Pune, India – Maharashtra Eyes on 100% PMAY Success. Maharashtra is making significant strides towards becoming the first Indian state to achieve 100% of its target under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme. This ambitious goal was articulated by then-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at a PMAY award function in Pune, an event graced by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.

Beyond the Initial Scope: Identifying Every Homeless Family
Initially, the PMAY scheme’s beneficiaries were identified based on the socio-economic survey of 2011. However, CM Fadnavis highlighted the shortcomings of this initial assessment, noting that it only identified 10 lakh homeless individuals in Maharashtra, all of whom subsequently received housing sanctions.
Recognizing the need for a more accurate count, the Maharashtra government conducted a fresh survey in 2018. This comprehensive exercise revealed a significantly higher number of beneficiaries, bringing the total to 30 lakh homeless individuals in the state. The state government has since been working diligently to expedite the necessary permissions for these newly sanctioned houses.

A New Survey on the Horizon?
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, while commending Maharashtra’s efforts, encouraged the state to conduct yet another survey. His suggestion aims to ensure that no homeless individual is left out of the PMAY scheme. Chouhan assured the state that if a fresh list of beneficiaries is provided, the Centre would readily sanction additional housing.
Maharashtra’s commitment to providing 30 lakh homes under PMAY represents a monumental step towards achieving housing for all. The state’s proactive approach in identifying and addressing the housing needs of its citizens positions it as a frontrunner in the nationwide PMAY initiative.
