MahaRERA Milestone : Mumbai Leads the State in Agent Registrations Over the Past Eight Years

The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has achieved a significant milestone, registering over 50,000 real estate agents since its inception eight years ago. This substantial number highlights the growing formalization of the real estate sector in the state.

Mumbai Tops the List of Registered Agents

Data released by MahaRERA reveals that Mumbai leads Maharashtra with the highest number of registered real estate agents, exceeding 11,800. This underscores Mumbai’s position as a major hub for real estate activity in the region.

Following Mumbai, the Pune region holds the second position with over 8,200 registered agents, with more than 7,000 based within Pune city itself. Thane ranks third with over 6,700 registered agents.

Other key regions include:

  • Nagpur: Over 1,500 registered agents
  • Nashik: 324 registered agents
  • Sambhaji Nagar: 343 registered agents

Pan-India Interest in Maharashtra’s Real Estate Market

Interestingly, MahaRERA has also registered real estate agents from 150 cities outside Maharashtra over the past eight years. This demonstrates the widespread interest in Maharashtra’s real estate market from professionals across the country. These cities include major metropolitan areas like New Delhi, Gurugram, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, as well as other significant locations such as Prayagraj, Goa, Ahmedabad, Patna, and Jammu.

Active vs. Cancelled Registrations

Of the total 50,673 registered agents, 31,980 currently have active registrations. MahaRERA has cancelled the registration of 18,693 agents for various reasons.

Mandatory Training and Certification for Agents

To ensure professionalism and competence in the sector, MahaRERA had mandated in January 2023 that all real estate agents must undergo training and obtain the prescribed certificate of registration. This move aims to enhance the quality of services provided by agents and protect the interests of homebuyers.

In May 2024, MahaRERA took action against non-compliant agents by suspending the registrations of over 20,000 individuals who failed to meet these mandatory training and certification requirements.

Enhanced Transparency with Half-Yearly Progress Reports

Further emphasizing transparency and accountability, MahaRERA, in February 2023, made it compulsory for real estate agents to not only pass a competency examination but also to make half-yearly progress reports public. These reports must detail the projects where the agents are appointed by developers to handle sales, providing valuable information to potential buyers.

MahaRERA Achieves 50,000 Registered Projects Milestone

This milestone in agent registration comes shortly after MahaRERA announced on May 8th that it has also crossed the mark of 50,000 registered real estate projects across Maharashtra. Notably, nearly half of these projects are located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Pune, highlighting the concentration of real estate development in these areas.

MahaRERA stands out as the leading real estate regulatory body in India in terms of project registrations, with Tamil Nadu ranking second with 27,609 registered projects and Gujarat in third place with 15,322 residential projects.
