India’s First High-Speed Rail Project Back on Track with New Deadline
In a major boost to India’s transport infrastructure, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has confirmed that the long-awaited Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project will be completed by 2028. This announcement signals renewed momentum for India’s first high-speed rail project, which had earlier faced delays during the previous state government’s tenure.
Mumbai Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project Delayed Under MVA Government
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, an ambitious venture estimated to cost between ₹70,000 to ₹80,000 crore, was indefinitely stalled during the rule of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, led by former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
“The delay led to unnecessary cost escalations and increased interest rates. Ultimately, it’s the state that bears the financial burden,” said Fadnavis while speaking to reporters in Mumbai.
Work in Gujarat Continues Unhindered
While the project came to a standstill in Maharashtra, work in the neighbouring state of Gujarat continued smoothly. As a result, Gujarat is now significantly ahead in terms of construction and infrastructure development for the bullet train.
Fadnavis added, “After the Mahayuti government took charge, we expedited the pending work in Maharashtra to bring the project back on track.”
